Nina + Joseph
Cave Springs // 10.2.22
Though Nina Phan and Joseph Nguyen first met in Fayetteville almost 20 years ago, it wasn’t until 2015 that their lives became more closely intertwined. That year, Nina had just moved back to Arkansas from Dallas, and it wasn’t long before the two started dating. “Secretly, I think he had a crush on me for a while,” Nina says with a laugh. In June 2021, Joseph—with the help of a few of Nina’s cousins—surprised his future bride with a proposal while on vacation in Cancun. She said “yes,” and the two started planning for a fall wedding in Northwest Arkansas.
Right away the couple was drawn to Osage House for its open layout and contemporary aesthetic. “We wanted chic and modern,” Nina says, describing their color palette as “blushing noir.” It was also important to both parties to honor and incorporate pieces of their Vietnamese heritage into the big day. “The morning of our wedding we had a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony at our home, and at the reception we served a seven-course Vietnamese familystyle dinner,” Nina says. They also surprised guests with a traditional “lion dance” during their grand entrance, which symbolizes good luck and prosperity. After a honeymoon in Turks and Caicos, the Nguyens are at home in Tontitown.
Along with arrangements of blooms in the blush color palette, Pigmint Floral Studio created an installation of greenery and disco balls over the dance floor. Nina’s bouquet featured roses, ranunculus, anthurium, and eucalyptus in a range of tones befitting both the day’s palette and the time of year.
After the ceremony, Nina and Joseph exited Osage House to bubbles blown by their 350 guests.
Nina was drawn to the sleek effect of acrylic, so their “amazing wedding planner,” Jessica Kersey, worked the material throughout the design. It’s seen in the reception chairs, custom seating chart, and even tiers of the cake.
“We both grew up listening to freestyle/new wave music, and we asked our DJ to play music from that genre,” Nina says.
